AIPAS M2 Pro Review

Is the AIPAS M2 Pro the FASTEST Electric Bike Under $1000?

The AIPAS M2 Pro is the latest iteration of the popular M2 model from AIPAS, promising a blend of power, versatility, and affordability. This electric bike (eBike) is designed as a class 2 vehicle out of the box but can be unlocked to reach class 3 speeds, allowing riders to hit up to 36 mph. I tested the M2 Pro extensively to verify these claims and explore its key features, performance, and real-world usability. Priced at $949 with a one-year warranty and a 3% discount code available, this eBike represents an attractive option in the sub-$1,000 category.

Design and Fit

At 72 inches in length, the M2 Pro is a large, sturdy bike ideal for riders between 5’8” and 7’6”. The solid stem handlebars curve back slightly, offering a comfortable, upright riding position. Although the frame size is fixed, seat height adjustments accommodate various rider heights effectively. The cockpit is user-friendly, featuring intuitive controls on both sides of the handlebar:

  • Left Side: Front brake, headlight and horn buttons, control pad for pedal assist and display functions
  • Right Side: Half-twist throttle, rear brake, and 7-speed thumb shifter

The full-color display is bright and easy to read, even in direct sunlight, enhancing the riding experience.

Speed and Pedal Assist Levels

The M2 Pro offers five levels of pedal assist plus throttle control. In testing, speeds achieved at each pedal assist level were approximately:

  • Level 1: 9 mph
  • Level 2: 13 mph
  • Level 3: 17 mph
  • Level 4: 23 mph
  • Level 5: 36 mph (unlocked class 3 speed)

Throttle response is smooth and gradual at low assists, preventing sudden jolts and ensuring rider safety. The bike hits its top speed quickly and maintains it without strain.

Torque and Hill Climbing

With 110 Nm of torque, the M2 Pro tackled steep inclines, including the challenging “Hill of Doom (31% Grade),” with ease even at 50% battery power. This level of torque is impressive for an eBike under $1,000, making the M2 Pro suitable for riders who face hilly terrains regularly.

Suspension and Off-Road Capability

The suspension system, combining front fork travel and rear shock, absorbs bumps effectively, providing a comfortable ride on rough trails and multi-terrain surfaces. The fat tires further enhance stability and grip, allowing the bike to navigate sand and gravel without difficulty. Although turning sharply on soft surfaces like sand can be tricky, the M2 Pro performed admirably during off-road testing.

Braking Performance

The mechanical disc brakes, while functional, showed limitations at higher speeds. Stopping distances were measured at:

  • 20 mph: Approximately 28 feet
  • 36 mph: Up to 56 feet

The brakes lock up easily but require a longer distance to stop safely at top speed, suggesting that hydraulic brakes would be a valuable upgrade for this eBike, especially when riding at class 3 speeds.

Walk Mode Feature

A convenient walk mode allows the bike to move forward at a gentle pace when activated by holding the minus button on pedal assist level 3 or above. This feature is useful for maneuvering the bike in tight spaces or walking up hills without pedaling.

Battery Life and Real-World Range

Real-world testing revealed the battery can deliver about 25 to 26 miles under rigorous conditions, including hill climbs, sand riding, and high-speed sprints. The display and GPS tracking apps showed close trip distance readings, with only about a mile discrepancy over 26 miles.

Battery power remained strong even below 40 volts, providing assist and throttle functionality until nearly depleted. Riders can extend range significantly by using lower pedal assist levels and pedaling more.

Comfort and Usability

The M2 Pro excels in rider comfort for a budget eBike. The seat cushion and springs absorb shocks well, and the upright riding posture reduces fatigue. Handlebar design allows good control without excessive forward lean.

The large, puncture-resistant fat tires provide confidence on varied terrains, including city streets, gravel paths, and light trails. The bike is quiet while riding off-road, with minimal drivetrain or motor noise.
