Segway Xyber Dual Battery
Segway Xyber Dual Battery
This is my full review on the double battery version of the Segway Xyber ebike. I run it thru all of my testing so I can compare it to the single battery version of the Xyber.
Electric bikes have become a popular option for urban commuters and leisure riders alike, and the Segway Xyber stands out in the competitive moped-style ebike market. With the addition of a second battery, this model promises enhanced performance, longer range, and superior hill-climbing abilities. In this detailed review, we explore how the dual battery setup transforms the Xyber, covering speed, range, hill climbs, ride quality, security features, and more.
The Segway Xyber is already a well-regarded single battery ebike, but adding a second battery significantly boosts its capabilities. Previously, the single battery limited top speeds and range, but with dual batteries, the performance leaps forward. This review focuses on testing the real-world benefits of this upgrade rather than revisiting full technical specs, which are covered comprehensively in the prior single battery review.
The bike’s styling recently got a fresh vinyl wrap, boosting its urban appeal and making it a head-turner on Chicago’s trails.
Increased Speed Across Modes
One of the most noticeable changes with the dual battery configuration is the top speed across all riding modes. When operating with just a single battery in eco mode, the Xyber was capped at 23 mph. However, after installing the second battery, the bike achieves 35 mph consistently in eco, sport, and race modes alike.
While the ultimate top speed is the same across modes with dual batteries, the acceleration rates differ which impacts how quickly the bike reaches 35 mph.
Acceleration Test Results
Three different speed tests were conducted to compare acceleration from a standing start to both 20 mph and 35 mph in eco, sport, and race modes:
Mode | Time to 20 mph | Time to 35 mph | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Eco | 6 seconds | 14.2 seconds | Smooth and gradual acceleration |
Sport | 4.2 seconds | 8.8 seconds | Faster acceleration speed |
Race | 3.3 seconds | 6.5 seconds | Quickest and most powerful |
Race mode offers the fastest takeoff and quickest time to max speed, but the ride remains remarkably smooth and controlled even at full power.
Hill Climbing Capabilities
A critical test for any ebike is steep hill performance. The Segway Xyber was challenged on a local “Hill of Doom,” which features a 31% grade incline.
- Dual Battery Test: In race mode with dual batteries, the Xyber ascended swiftly and confidently with no signs of strain.
- Single Battery Test: Even with only one battery installed and at 63% charge, the bike still cleared the hill with ease, though noticeably slower than the dual battery setup.
The bike’s hill climbing prowess is attributed not just to battery power but to an integrated gyro system that detects inclines and ramps up torque accordingly, ensuring steady power delivery on steep terrain.
Smooth Ride Dynamics
The Segway Xyber handles exceptionally well, offering a smooth ride that feels natural even at higher speeds. It weighs approximately 168-170 lbs with both batteries installed, which adds to its stability without compromising agility. The rear suspension spring is adjustable, tailored here for a rider weight of 225 lbs, and the reviewer experienced no issues with bottoming out. Heavier riders may want to consider further suspension tuning.
Practical Urban Features
- Bell and Horn: Useful for alerting pedestrians and other trail users. The horn is especially beneficial in city traffic while the bell works well on shared bike paths.
- Quiet Operation: The motor operates silently, contributing to a calm riding experience without the disruptive sounds common in many electric bikes.
Battery Life and Range
The dual battery pack doubles the amperage capacity from 30Ah (single) to 60Ah, providing an impressive increase in both range and power output.
Real-World Range Testing
On a full dual battery charge, the Xyber covered nearly 58 miles on mixed city streets and trail riding before hitting the low battery threshold. This is roughly double the 30 miles achievable with a single battery under similar conditions.
Even with heavy wind resistance (notably common in Chicago), the bike maintained speed and power well into the low battery percentages. Cruise control mode enhanced the riding experience over longer distances by maintaining a steady pace without constant rider input.
Battery Indicators and Power Management
As battery power diminishes, riders notice a gradual drop in acceleration and power, particularly below 30%. Shifting between eco, sport, and race modes helps compensate as needed.
Security Features
One standout aspect of the Segway Xyber is its smart security system, which includes:
- Air Lock: The bike automatically locks when the kickstand is down and handlebars are turned after the rider dismounts. Both the front forks and rear wheel lock, preventing the bike from being rolled away.
- Alarm System: If tampered with, an audible alarm sounds, and the owner receives a mobile notification alerting them of attempted interference.
The reviewer credits this feature with preventing the theft of 20 other ebikes stored nearby during a real attempted robbery, underscoring the effectiveness of the Xyber’s smart locking system and its ability to warn you when the bike has been moved.
Urban Commuting and Errand Running
The Segway Xyber excels as a practical urban vehicle for daily errands, chiropractic appointments, or navigating congested areas. Its smooth throttle control and top speed suitable for city traffic make it a versatile and enjoyable choice for riders prioritizing convenience over high speed.
Legal Considerations
While the bike exceeds typical bicycle speed limits (28 mph), it is classified more as a moped. Local regulations vary, but the reviewer notes Chicago tends to be tolerant as long as safe riding practices are followed.
Exercise and Pedaling
Despite being pedal-assist capable, the bike requires minimal to no pedaling due to its powerful electric motor. For riders seeking exercise, this might not be ideal, but for those focused on effortless transport, it delivers outstanding ease of use.
Final Thoughts
The Segway Xyber with its dual battery setup offers a compelling combination of power, range, and ride quality in a sleek, quiet, and feature-rich package. Its ability to climb steep hills effortlessly, and provide smart security controls distinguishes it in the moped-style ebike segment.
For riders wanting a reliable e-moped that easily handles city traffic, extended trips, and tough inclines without sacrificing comfort or convenience, the Segway Xyber dual battery version is an excellent choice.
