Lectric XP4 Review

My Controller Tried to Mess Up My Lectric XP4 Review

Lectric has taken its top-selling XP3.0 and pushed the limits with the new XP4 folding eBike. Designed as a Class 2 eBike, it offers riders a maximum speed of 20 mph using a thumb throttle and five levels of pedal assist. The bike can also be unlocked to Class 3 speeds. Whether you prefer a standard or long-range version, the XP4 is tailored to deliver power, comfort, and convenience packed into a compact, foldable frame. This review dives deep into the bike’s specs, riding experience, advanced settings, battery performance, and overall usability.

Two Versions for Different Needs

The Lectric XP4 comes in two primary versions:

  • Standard Edition: 500W motor paired with a smaller battery, priced at $999.
  • Long Range Edition: 750W motor, larger battery, and enhanced range for $1,299 (prices may vary with promotions).

The long-range model weighs about 71 lbs due to its heftier 9 lb battery while the standard version is lighter. Both can handle payloads up to 330 lbs.

Frame Options and Colors

The XP4 is available in two frame styles:

  • Stepover Frame: Suited for riders between 4’10″ to 6’3″, available in pine green and tempest gray.
  • Step-through Frame: Easier mounting, offered in stratus white, tempest gray, and raindrop blue.
Motor and Transmission
  • 750W Rear Hub Motor: Peak output of 1310W, producing 85 Nm torque for robust acceleration and hill climbing.
  • 500W Rear Hub Motor: Peak 1092W output with 55 Nm torque for lighter or urban riders.
  • Both versions feature an 8-speed Shimano Altus derailleur with a 56T chainring for smooth shifting across diverse terrains.
Battery and Charging
  • Long Range Battery: 48V, 17.5Ah with 840Wh capacity, charges in approximately 7-9 hours with the standard 2A charger.
  • Standard Battery: 48V, 10.4Ah with 499.2Wh capacity.
  • Optional 5A fast charger reduces long-range battery charge time to about 3.5 hours.
A convenient frame-mounted battery with key lock allows easy removal and off-bike charging.
Safety and Comfort Features
  • Hydraulic disc brakes (Tektro 602 Star Union, 180mm rotors) provide excellent stopping power.
  • Front suspension forks with 50mm travel, adjustable preload, and lockout for comfort on rough roads.
  • Puncture-resistant 20×3 inch tires preloaded with slime sealant.
  • Cushioned saddle with springs, suspension seat post, wide ergonomic grips, and quick release seat clamp for comfort and custom fit.
  • Integrated rear rack rated for 150 lbs, with mounting points for child seats and accessories via a Level Up Rack system.
  • Folding mechanism reduces the bike to compact dimensions for easy transport and storage.
Clean and Functional Color Display

The XP4 features an upgraded, bright color display which can switch to black and white mode — highly visible in sunlight. It shows:

  • Battery percentage and voltage
  • Current speed
  • Pedal assist level
  • Trip data including distance, motor power, and voltage
Intuitive Controls at Your Fingertips
  • Throttle located on the left handlebar alongside brake levers and a control pad.
  • Multi-function buttons to toggle pedal assist, turn signals, and lights.
  • Right handlebar contains the Shimano trigger shifter for gear changes.
  • Adjustable settings accessible directly from the display, including assist levels, throttle behavior, classification mode (Class 1, 2, or 3), and light modes.
  • USB-C port integrated for charging devices or connecting accessories.
  • Display is removable for security.
Customization for Rider Preference and Local Laws

The bike’s classification can be changed to suit local eBike regulations:

  • Class 1: Pedal assist up to 20 mph, no throttle
  • Class 2: Pedal assist and throttle both up to 20 mph
  • Class 3: Pedal assist up to 28 mph, throttle up to 20 mph
  • California Class 3: Pedal assist up to 28 mph, no throttle

This flexibility allows riders to maximize performance or comply with regulations easily.

On-Road Riding

The XP4 delivers a smooth and powerful ride. The torque-sensing pedal assist engages instantly, providing a natural and responsive boost especially useful for hill climbs and resisting wind. Throttle response is aggressive and immediate, reaching the 20 mph limit smoothly in about 8-9 seconds. The ergonomic seating position combined with cushioned grips and suspension (both fork and seat post) makes long rides comfortable even on rougher urban roads.

Off-Road and Variable Terrain

Thanks to the durable tires, suspension forks, and powerful motor, the XP4 handles gravel roads, sandy patches, and the occasional trail with confidence. The torque sensor ensures consistent power delivery to cut through sand and inclines. The folding design does not compromise the bike’s stability or handling, making it versatile for different environments.

Hill Climbing Performance

The 750W motor excels on steep grades up to 20°, with pedal assist levels effectively supporting riders through varying terrain difficulty. While eco mode requires more rider effort uphill, sport plus and turbo modes provide ample power to conquer hills effortlessly, maintaining comfortable speeds.

Braking and Safety

The hydraulic disc brakes offer strong and reliable stopping power, achieving stops from 20 mph within 19 feet — impressive for a folding eBike of its weight class. Brake feel is excellent with good modulation, instilling confidence in rider control.

Real-World Range

The long-range version promises up to 85 miles on a single charge under ideal conditions. During testing, the XP4 achieved nearly 30 miles before battery depletion signs appeared, even tackling hills, off-road, and throttle use.

Battery Indicator Accuracy

The battery display updates in 10% increments and tends to overestimate charge by about 10%, making voltage readouts a better indicator of true battery health. Voltage monitoring is a helpful feature allowing riders to gauge real-time battery status precisely. The bike supports fast charging and easy battery removal, adding convenience.

Power Output Under Load

Even when battery levels dip below 20%, the motor continues delivering consistent power without pulsing or cutting out abruptly, ensuring riders are supported until reserve energy runs out. Walk mode assists with pushing the bike up inclines at speeds of 3 to 3.7 mph, easing handling during stops or steep sections.

Compact Folding Dimensions

When folded, the XP4 measures roughly 27 inches long, 29 inches high, and 17 inches wide — compact enough for SUVs, cars, or tight storage spaces. Folding begins by releasing the stem and using the frame latch to fold the bike backward. Battery locking mechanisms ensure secure transport.

Frame Geometry and Fit

Adjustable stem height and suspension seat post range accommodate riders from 4’10” to 6’3”, ensuring comfort across various sizes. The new geometry provides an upright riding posture, enhancing visibility and reducing rider fatigue.

Noise and Rattling

Some users have reported minor rattling noises from the battery area, likely fixable with simple padding or adjustments. This is a minor concern and doesn’t affect functionality.

Controller Glitches

During my review, I had occasional controller glitches leading to bike shutdowns or loss of assist have been noted but are solvable via firmware updates or controller replacements. Lectric Bikes is known for excellent customer support, offering rapid assistance and replacement parts.
