Heybike Hybrid Review: Comfort Without the Premium Price Tag

The HeyBike Hybrid is a Class 2 electric bicycle equipped with a thumb throttle and pedal assist levels, enabling speeds up to 20 miles per hour. It weighs 69 pounds, supports a maximum payload of 440 pounds, and is available for approximately $1,699 with a 2-year warranty. The bike comes in a single size designed to accommodate riders with heights ranging from 53 to 63 inches and is available in three colors: Ruby Red, Onyx Black, and Emerald Green.

Motor and Battery

The HeyBike Hybrid is powered by a 48-volt, 750-watt Galaxy E-drive system, delivering a peak power output of 12,200 watts and 75 Newton-meters of torque. It supports an 8-speed drivetrain with a 12×32 freewheel, Altus derailleur, 48-tooth chainring, and an 8-speed trigger shifter, providing a versatile range for different riding conditions.

The battery is a 48-volt, 18 amp-hour unit with 864 watt-hours of capacity, integrated discreetly into the down tube. Charging is facilitated by a 3-amp charger, requiring approximately six hours for a full charge from zero. The battery can be charged either on or off the bike, with a keyed lock system ensuring security and an on/off switch for power management. The battery is UL2271 and UL2849 certified and has an IPX5 rating, indicating resistance to water jets from any angle.

Frame and Suspension

The bike features a hardtail frame with 100 mm hydraulic front suspension forks that are preload adjustable, have compression controls, and include a lockout feature for efficient pedaling. The tires measure 27.5 by 2.4 inches, are puncture resistant, and exhibit a street-friendly tread pattern, manufactured by Kenda (Quick 75 model). The front wheel is equipped with a quick-release mechanism for easy removal.

Additional frame features include metal fenders, a single-sided chainring guard, aluminum pedals, a quick-release seat post, and a wide, cushioned saddle with integrated shock absorbers for enhanced ride comfort. The rear rack supports up to 66 pounds, with mounting points for a front basket and an adjustable stem to customize rider fit and comfort.

Braking and Safety

Stopping power comes from Tektro two-piston hydraulic brakes paired with 180 mm rotors, delivering reliable and responsive braking performance during various riding conditions. The bike is equipped with integrated lighting including a bright headlight, tail light, brake light, and turn signals, increasing rider visibility and safety.

Handlebar Controls and Display

The left handlebar houses a locking rubber grip with a palm rest, the front brake lever, and the throttle. The control pad features the power button, pedal assist level controls (+ and –), headlight toggle, turn signal buttons, mode button, and horn. The full-color display provides clear visibility of speed, battery status, pedal assist level, trip mileage, and other ride data.

The display cycles through various metrics such as odometer, trip distance, maximum speed, average speed, battery voltage, and ride time using the mode button. Pedal assist levels range from 0 (no assist) to 5 (maximum assist). The headlight and turn signals can be activated and deactivated via dedicated buttons, with the turn signals continuing to flash until manually turned off.

Advanced Settings and App Integration

The HeyBike Hybrid supports advanced configurations accessible via a combination of button presses on the display or through the dedicated Hey Bike mobile app. Settings include switching between mileage and kilometers, adjusting pedal assist modes, tire size, and speed limits, including toggling between Class 2 and Class 3 speed modes.

The app offers extensive customization such as setting throttle speed limits, changing pedal assist levels from five to three, fine-tuning speed limits for each assist level, and selecting riding modes between Boost and Standard. Riders can also reset trip data, check firmware updates, add multiple profiles, and track rides with GPS integration.

Riding Experience and Pedal Assist Modes

The HeyBike Hybrid offers a smooth and comfortable ride, with a plush seat and responsive suspension absorbing shocks from rough terrain and urban obstacles. Pedal assist is available in two sensor modes: torque and cadence.

  • Torque Sensor Mode: The motor output responds proportionally to the pressure applied on the pedals, providing a natural and intuitive riding feel. For example, at pedal assist level 1, the bike maintains a steady speed of about 9 mph but accelerates as the rider pedals harder.
  • Cadence Sensor Mode: The motor maintains a preset speed regardless of pedaling force, launching the bike to the selected speed at the chosen pedal assist level, offering a consistent speed without additional effort.

The reviewer preferred torque sensor mode for its responsiveness and better battery efficiency.

Speed and Range

Top speeds recorded ranged from 20 mph at pedal assist level 3 to approximately 28 mph at level 5, with a slight discrepancy between the bike’s display and GPS readings (the display tends to overestimate speed by about 1 mph). The estimated range of up to 100 miles on a single charge is achievable under optimal conditions but may vary based on terrain, rider weight, and environmental factors such as cold weather, which can reduce battery performance.

Hill Climbing Capability

The bike demonstrated the ability to climb a 20-degree incline (“hill of pain”) with ease when using pedal assist levels 3 to 5, although throttle-only mode struggled at the steepest sections. Pedaling assistance is recommended for steep climbs to maintain momentum and reduce strain on the motor.

Off-Road and Sand Performance

The HeyBike Hybrid is primarily designed for urban and commuter use. Off-road testing showed the bike handled uneven terrain comfortably thanks to its suspension and tire grip. However, in sand, the bike sank and struggled to maintain traction, indicating it is not suitable for beach or deep sand riding.

Braking and Safety Features

Braking tests at 20 mph resulted in a stopping distance of approximately 20 feet, while at 28 mph, the stopping distance increased to about 42 feet. Despite the longer distance at higher speeds, braking felt controlled and confident, aided by the hydraulic disc brakes and grippy tires.

Additional Observations
  • The horn is loud but awkwardly placed, suggesting a bell might be a more practical alternative for trail riding and pedestrian environments.
  • Turn signals do not automatically deactivate and require manual shutdown, which could be improved for user convenience.
  • Minor rattling noises were noted during off-road use, likely due to loose bolts, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance checks.
  • The battery indicator bar on the display lacks precision, necessitating voltage monitoring and reference charts to accurately estimate remaining charge.
Rider Fit and Adjustments

The bike’s adjustable stem allows customization of handlebar height, angle, and reach, accommodating riders of different heights and preferences. The seat post is quick release, enabling easy saddle height adjustments with a standover height of 18 inches and seat heights ranging from 33 to 39 inches depending on rider size.

Comfort Features

The wide, cushioned seat combined with suspension seat post absorbers contributes significantly to ride comfort, especially during longer rides or rough surfaces. The bike’s ergonomic grips and well-positioned controls enhance rider comfort and control.

Final Thoughts

The HeyBike Hybrid is a compelling option for those seeking a reliable, long-range commuter eBike with an attractive price point. Its 48-volt, 18 amp-hour battery provides ample range, while the 750-watt motor offers sufficient power for urban riding and moderate hill climbing. Advanced features like a full-color display, integrated lighting, turn signals, and a customizable app elevate the user experience.

While not designed for extreme off-road or sand riding, the bike excels in city and trail environments. The braking system performs well, and the suspension setup ensures a comfortable ride. Some minor improvements could be made in battery display accuracy and control ergonomics, but these do not overshadow the overall value.

For first-time eBike buyers or those looking for a dependable commuter bike without premium pricing, the HeyBike Hybrid represents a practical and enjoyable choice.
